A Maleficent Halloween

“Before the sun sets on her sixteenth birthday, she shall prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die!”

“There’s only going to be one scary witch this Halloween and that’s ma ma ma…… Maleficent!”  My youngest Ami has been going around telling this to everyone she’s seen all week!  My kids love this holiday, just like their mama, and were super excited for me to make their costumes.  We started planning out our looks almost a month ago, but I only had a short time to actually sew after returning from our trip to MN. Ami is obsessed with Maleficent so we went with a Sleeping Beauty theme for the two of us.  Nigel at 6 years old wanted something scarier, like his older cousin Koan, and decided a week ago he would be “Death“.
We had a fabulous time trick or treating in my sister’s neighborhood  with the family .  Since we live in a condo complex we always end up traveling from home for Halloween.  The kids love heading out with their cousins Ko and Veda each year, they are best buds, plus they always end up with a huge candy stash.
Big thanks to my awesome sis Meg for all these amazing photos!  I wish my blog images always looked this amazing.  Artistry runs in the family and my sister is an amazing professional photographer and business woman.  Check out her blog, Megan DiPiero Photography for more inspiration.  She’s awesome!

The Details:

Me as Sleeping Beauty:   My Briar Rose Skater Dress, a quick self drafted organic black knit Corset, floral scarf, blond wig, headband and basket.

Amelie as Maleficent:  Self drafted gown made from repurposed cocktail dresses from Goodwill,  self drafted  velvet remnant hood with horns (carved styro wrapped in the velvet fabric strips). The Gown has a zip front and two layers of sleeves.  I cut the bottom layer of the sleeve from an embossed satin in purple and lined it with a purple organic cotton from Honey Be Good.  The outer sleeve is a flowy chiffon that is tacked up.  The body of the dress is a shiny black Polyester from one of the cocktail dresses and lined in a black repurposed knit.  The collar is repurposed from a quilted silver jacket for body with the same embossed satin as the sleeves.
Nigel as “Death”:  little girls’ skater dress from Kitschy Coo (7/8) made up as a turtleneck top with an attached hood, self drafted leggings  and eco felt skull mask with stitching.  The outfit was made with an ebony organic cotton and spandex  knit from Marcy Tilton which is so soft.    The interior hood is from a repurposed top and has two buttons to attach his mask so it can be worn up or the mask can be switched out.  Nigel told me he wants to wear it every day!

Here are some more images of the whole family.  Love my Mom’s tourist costume and my husband Vic put on Ami’s horns (they only got worn for pictures unsurprisingly) so he ended up looking like a Satyr with his beard.  He cracked me up all night!  The cousins were perfectly matched.  Two spooky deadly boys and Rapunzel with Maleficent.
