Rouleau Edged Top

One of my goals for the year has been to up my repertoire of sewing techniques and this rouleau edged top is the result!  I saw the cover for the Threads Feb/March 2015 Issue (#177) and was hooked. The bodice and hems utilize a rouleau technique of hand stitched bias tubes as edging. The effect is airy and beautiful. And the aqua blue silk used was just stunning! You can see my inspiration on my Pinterest Board for …

Aquarelle Dyeing: Liquid Indigo

I’ve been holding off on my natural dyeing all summer as we’ve been trying to sell our condo. Boy have I missed it!  We had a lull in viewings though in the last week as we prepared for hurricane weather here with Erika-a no show.  I decided a bit of kit dyeing was in order.  I pulled out my as yet unused Aquarelle Liquid Dye kit from Botanical Colors and decided to …

Naturally Dyed Easter Eggs

Spring is in the air!  The Tabebuia trees are in full bloom here in Florida.  The bright yellow trumpet-like flowers are so beautiful, though fleeting! Our Easter holiday traditions have slowly gotten more eco-friendly along with my interests in natural dyeing and natural living.  The kids have pink and blue wire baskets that I fill with reusable eco-grass and fill with British and organic candies (my husband is originally from the UK).  For …

Vintage Vogue Knit Dress + Cochineal Dyeing

A new organic knit dress, lots of historical reading and my first try at dyeing with Cochineal. It’s been a great week! I’ve been so psyched to work with cochineal after I received my dye from Botanical Colors. I’ve been reading A Perfect Red by Amy Butler Greenfield which is all about Cochineal and its trade in the New World, so intriguing.  The dye itself comes from the parasitic female insect that …

Shell Wrap Shibori Jacket

I’ve had this make finished for quite a while but it’s been just too hot to take pics.  I still probably won’t get any wear out of this for a few more months, but I love it!  This jacket was made with the leftover yardage from my Deer & Doe Centauree Dress and while the pink was lovely I didn’t want two pieces in my wardrobe that were so …

Avocado Dyed Marcy Tilton Pants

These are my new favorite pants!  I love the wide leg silhouette that tapers with two lower leg pleats, the fitted and darted waist in front with an elastic band in back (so comfy!) and all the seaming details.  Plus giant pockets!  And the hemp is so light and soft after washing and drying looking much like linen.  I need these pants in every color! I purchased …

Summer Sewing Plans

It’s been a busy summer with both kids home all day and tons of family visiting.  I’m a bit amazed by how much sewing I’ve accomplished lately!  I thought I better plan out my makes for the rest of the summer  since my fabric and pattern stash has grown quite a bit lately.  The weather tends to stay warm here until way past December so I’ll be wearing …
