Join me today as we map out some unforgettable stops along the French Riviera, the perfect inspiration for planning your own unforgettable journey. Let’s create and design the perfect travel capsule wardrobe for a dream getaway to the breathtaking destination of Nice, France.  Renowned for its mesmerizing ocean vistas, charming towns, and delectable cuisine, Nice beckons with promises of unforgettable experiences.  Picture yourself wandering through cobblestone streets, soaking up the sun on beautiful pebble beaches, touring hilltop botanical gardens and museums and exploring local antique and flower markets.

If you have a trip you’re planning, be sure to let me know in the comments.  I’m happy to take your recommendations for future videos.

For my plan today I’m designing a capsule collection around a 10-14 day couples trip to Nice and the surrounding French Riviera.  I visited last in my early 20’s, backpacking through Europe after studying art in Italy, and would love to take a trip back to one of my very favorite places with my husband. My husband loves to dive so this would also be a great active vacation for both of us. Maybe for our 20th anniversary!

The Massena Museum (Musée Masséna) Nice, côte d'azur

Nestled along the French Riviera, Nice is a picturesque city known for its stunning Mediterranean coastline, vibrant street life, and rich cultural heritage.  Nice offers a blend of history, art, and natural beauty that captivates visitors from around the world.

Explore the charming Old Town (Vieux Nice) with its narrow streets, bustling markets, and colorful buildings. On Mondays visit the Antique Market and Tuesday through Thursday visit the Flower Market. Walk the iconic Promenade des Anglais, a beautiful waterfront promenade lined with palm trees, cafes, and beaches. Take a stroll along the Colline du Château for panoramic views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea.

While I’m designing this bucket list trip, I might as well mention where I would love to stay someday.  While not in my current budget, a girl can dream!

This 5-star hotel located on the famous Promenade des Anglais offers a private beach club and luxurious accommodations. A symbol of the city of Nice for over a century, The Negresco offers the Côte d’Azur its stunning pink dome and elegant façade. The Negresco has a gorgeous collection of works of art and rare furniture dating from Louis XIV to the present day.

The hotel offers views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Bay of Angels. It is located only 15 minutes from the International Airport in Nice on one side and the same distance from Old Nice on the other. Stroll along the Promenade des Anglais, visit the Museum Massena next door, have lunch at the Beach Club, and fine dining at it’s Michelin-starred restaurant Le Chantecler.

“Relaxation areas and passageways lend themselves to contemplation: artworks, music, and culinary treats served in a dedicated salon, courtesy of our Michelin-starred chef Virginie Basselot. The sauna, hammam, and experiential showers add another element of relaxation and serenity.

Dry or wet treatment areas enable guests to immerse themselves in a cabin for a voluptuous body and facial pampering session. The Spa’s swimming pool is flooded with natural light, creating an enchanting environment where guests can relax to the sound of music, even in the deep end. Our Spa provides a truly innovative immersive yoga experience where sound and movement are brought together with digital art to provide the perfect setting for a guided session of escapism. This worldwide innovation harnesses the latest technology to deliver an innovative approach to well-being.”

When traveling overseas I prefer a longer trip as the biggest cost is usually airfare. So, I’d plan a 10-14 day vacation. This provides ample time to explore the city and surrounding areas at a leisurely pace. I’m thinking of this as a pretty active trip with lots of walking, swimming and diving (for my husband). Visits to museums, gardens and villages and trips to the antique and flower markets. Plus, amazing food!

May is an ideal time to visit Nice, as the weather is warm and sunny but not yet too hot, and the tourist crowds are still relatively small. Average temperatures range from 17°C to 23°C (63°F to 73°F), making it perfect for outdoor activities and sightseeing. This would be the perfect time of year for me- a bit cooler than I’m used to but still Spring like.

Day 1 – Travel Day (Flight)

I’d fly into Nice from Miami. Air France with a connection in Paris. Trip is 11hours 40 minutes.  Approx. price: $3700 Premium Economy,10K Business, 13K + Premiere

Day 2

For any trip I take I like to plan my first day to decompress and rest while recovering from any jet lag. I’d plan a simple day at my lodging and then a walk along the Promenade des Anglais with my husband.

To Read:

  • A Distant Mirror (Barbara Tuchman, 1987). Respected historian Barbara Tuchman paints a portrait of 14th-century France.  A classic!
  • Travels Through the French Riviera: An Artist’s Guide to the Storied Coastline, from Menton to Saint-Tropez by Virginia Johnson  (beautiful book with lovely illustrations)
  • Naughty in Nice, Rhys Bowen (Her Royal Spyness #5)  ( I love this whole series!)

To Watch:

  • Jean de Florette (1986). This tale of greed and intolerance follows a hunchback as he fights for the property he inherited in rural France. Its sequel, Manon of the Spring (1986), continues with his daughter’s story.  One of my favorite movies!
  • Ronin (1998). Robert De Niro stars in this crime caper, which includes a car chase through Paris and scenes filmed in Nice, Villefranche-sur-Mer, and Arles.
  • To Catch a Thief (1955). Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller showcases the French Riviera starring Grace Kelly and Cary Grant.
  • A Good Year (2006). This British-American romantic comedy, starring Russell Crowe and Marion Cotillard, is loosely based on the novel by Peter Mayle and filmed at a Luberon winery recommended in the book.
  • Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988). Steve Martin and Michael Caine star in this hilarious flick, filmed in and around Villefranche-sur-Mer.
