Floral Floor Pillows

This is my best scrap buster project yet! I had just a bit of leftover denim from my culottes and two large matching upholstery samples (with a small bit of piecing) for two large floor pillows for my new yoga room/hallway. Bonus- they’re filled with all my fabric scraps from the last year that I’ve been collecting and cutting up into small pieces.

I’m really excited to show off my new yoga space. As a former Visual Merchandising manager my second love is home decor. I love space planning which sometimes makes my husband a little crazy…furniture is always moving around in our home.

Originally, I asked my very handy dad if he could build me a wooden plank for my birthday. I wanted to do yoga in the upstairs hallway but it’s fully carpeted. He thought that was a waste of effort. He said he’d rather give me the money instead to redo the floor. We’ve been slowly renovating our home since we bought it almost 2 years ago . Flooring for the upstairs level was way back on our list. Vic and I went to pick out/ price flooring and found this beautiful wood look porcelain tile. I love the large planks and the texture. Plus in Florida where it’s always hot having a cool floor surface is ideal. Vic and his father installed the floor after my birthday and it was quite the process. Vic worked on finishing up the grouting last week and I just love my new space!

I painted the walls a cool pale grey green [Filmy Green, Sherwin Williams SW6190] and bought myself a lovely console table to hold my diffuser, some crystals and a meditation candle my brother in law gifted me. Of course Pomona had to hang in the space too- another gift from my mom. I have space for my yoga mats, blocks and all my accessories in the drawers. I can stand the pillows on their side when I need the space for my daily yoga practice. It’s so nice having this out of the way quiet space to exercise and meditate in. Perfect use for this small nook.

Construction:

  • I cut down my original squares to 24″ X 20″ and used the extra 4″ strips for the side panels.
  • Half the side panels are in the floral and half in the denim with one side pieced in the center.
  • I cut one each of the original side panels in half to install invisible zippers.
  • I then attached all my side panels together.
  • Next, I sewed the tops to the main panels pivoting at the corners.
  • Last I stuffed ALL my fabric scraps inside!

The yellow floral is just so pretty with the denim! I don’t wear this color often so it was extra fun to make something in this palette. The accent print really adds a nice layer to the room and they make nice firm meditation cushions. Having two means my daughter can sit with me if she wants. Plus I can prop them together for a comfy corner seat. It doubles as a little reading nook. The best part though was being able to use up that large bin of scrap fabric I had. I save larger pieces for projects/interfacing etc. but small scraps are perfect for filling. I love having as little waste as possible in my sewing practice.

Back soon with my Spring sewing plans. I’m sketching away and inventorying my growing fabric stash! We just had what looks like our last cold front ( in the 50’s) and it’s feeling very spring-like lately. I’m enjoying this last chance to wear my winter makes before switching over to my usual summer wear. Happy Sewing!
