Inspiration is Everywhere

Part 1: Planning and Sewing a Seasonal Wardrobe

Hi everyone, and welcome to Part 1 of my new series “Planning and Sewing a Seasonal Wardrobe.” I’m here to help you create a wardrobe that’s stylish and sustainable! One piece at a time.

Inspiration is Everywhere

Find your Inspiration!

Today I’m talking about finding inspiration for your Handmade Seasonal Wardrobe. This is an important step in the planning process, because it will help you define the look and feel of your wardrobe. I like to start with a large and varied selection of ideas and then narrow them down later in the process.

My Summer 2023 Mood Board

There are many different places where you can find inspiration for your handmade seasonal wardrobe. Here are a few faves:

People you know

Pay attention to the way your friends, family, and colleagues dress. Who do you admire their style? What pieces do they wear that you like?

Social media

There are many fashion influencers and bloggers on social media who share their style with the world. Follow accounts that you find inspiring and see what kind of outfits they put together.

Magazines & websites

There are many fashion and sewing magazines and websites that feature editorials and street style photos. These can be a great source of inspiration for new trends and ideas.

Film & TV

Pay attention to the way characters are dressed in your favorite movies and TV shows. This can be a great way to get inspiration for different looks.

Travel

When you travel, take some time to explore the local fashion scene. See what people are wearing in different cities and countries. This can be a great way to get inspired by new styles and trends.

High fashion & Designer runways

If you’re looking for cutting-edge fashion, check out runway shows from fashion weeks around the world. You can find photos and videos of runway shows online. Pay attention to the fabrics, the colors, and the details. What do you love about the pieces? What would you like to incorporate into your own wardrobe?

Art & Architecture

Art can be a great way to find inspiration for color palettes, textures, and patterns. Pay attention to the color, shapes and movement. What do you find visually appealing?

Style Icons

If you have a favorite style icon, you can also use them as a source of inspiration for your handmade seasonal wardrobe. Pay attention to the pieces they wear, the way they style their hair and makeup, and their overall personal style. Try to find images that show them in life situations similar to your own. Unless you attend multiple fashion or evening events red carpet looks don’t generally work with most people’s day to day looks.

Your own closet

Here’s one of my earlier videos showing how I go through my closet each season.

Don’t forget to look at your own closet for inspiration! What pieces do you love to wear? What pieces do you need to update or refashion?

Once you’ve found your inspiration, it’s time to start putting it all together. This is where your personal style comes in. Think about what you love to wear and what makes you feel confident.

Now it’s time to start collecting and curating your ideas. A great way to do this is to use Pinterest. Pinterest is a great tool for saving images and inspiration. You can create boards for different seasons, styles, or designers.

I create multiple boards throughout the year and then create a dedicated board for each season I’m designing for. So, this season I have a new board labeled Fall Winter 2023/24 Sewing & Wardrobe Plans. I start with broad ideas that I will curate later.

For daily fashion inspiration and to see what I’m loving, follow me on Pinterest. Let’s embark on this sustainable fashion journey together!
