KCW Days 2 & 3- Shorts & Knits

KCW Days 2 & 3- Sew Pomona

Love being in this sewing grove with KCW– I just have to try not to overdo it :)  I got at least an hour of sewing in every day, Tuesday during naps and Wednesday in the morning before Ami woke and then in the afternoon for a bit.  Getting pictures was the tricky part!  When I finally got the kids outside to pose they decided they’d rather play run and hide from mommy and the sun was super strong so getting a nice shot was much harder.

Day 2’s make are swim shorts for Nigel that I made out of my husband Vic’s old pair.  I used a pattern I had in my stash that I bought on sale ages ago, McCall’s M6548.  I have this pattern in sizes 7-14 so it’s a bit too large for my 5yo but I figured I could get it to work.  I made view E keeping all the original pockets of the trunks intact when I cut it apart.  Next time I’ll make the waist smaller and make the waistband itself wider but I like the length of this pair.  Working with repurposed items make for a few more challenges trying to cut everything out.  I really like this pattern since It has a lot of different short options plus two shirts which I plan on making later too.  I had to really tighten the elastic in the waist on this pair since Nigel has such a tiny waist but I figure at least these can grow with him for quite a while if I just change out the elastic as he grows.

KCW Day 2 & 3 Sew Pomona

For day 3 I made a little knit wrap tunic from the free tutorial by Craftiness is Not Optional that you can find the link to here.   So glad I found this on pinterest :) The pattern is for wovens so I made the size 2-3T.  I made this up pretty quickly so it looks a bit crafty but I still think it’s really cute.  I used a double needle to stitch all the edges and serged the interior.  I had a little fiasco with the sleeves(attached them in the wrong order-duh) and needed a creative fix so serged the armholes and sewed them flat.  I think the bright teal thread with the double needle multicolored stitches actually looks kind of cool so I’m happy with this quick make.  Love that it’s reversible too!  I used some remnants for the blue dot side and the red print is from one of my old dresses.  Looking forward to making another version-correctly this time :)

I also had time on Day 3 for a super quick pair of shorts for Ami that are self drafted.   These were one of my favorite pairs of Boden shorts from before I was married that were just too small- I don’t think I’m going back to my pre-kids size 4 for awhile.  I cut the front and back as one piece (so two pattern pieces all together) to keep the waistband and all the pockets.  It was easy to thread some elastic inside and then fold over the waistband and serge my seams.  I did a simple double needle hem and was done- took maybe 20 minutes :)

Tomorrow I’m hoping to get Ami’s mini me dress done.  I just drafted out a pattern so we’ll see how that goes!  Happy Sewing!

Very cute, especially the little top. And so practical! First eat, then turn around :-)
I’m not so lucky with sewing time right now. So far I finished a pair of leggings for each girl. Hope to get some sewingtime in over the weekend.

    Herzliche Grüße,

Thanks so much Rebecca! I’m loving KCW- gives me an excuse to sew everyday(I normally only sew on the weekends) and get all my kids sewing done for the season! Can’t wait to see what you make! :)

  2. […] flattering!  I’ve made a few of the girl’s version for my daughter (which you can view here and here) so the construction of this was super fast.  I think I made this in less than 2 hours […]
