I got quite a bit sewn during last week’s KCW, though getting pics taken took longer. Almost all my makes ended up being variations on the skater dress pattern from Kitschy Coo! It’s such a versatile pattern. I made Ami three dresses (you can see the first two here) two shirts for Nigel and both kid’s costumes for Halloween which I’ll be blogging about next week. I’m almost done with all the costumes! Just making Ami’s headpiece/horns for Maleficent and Nigel’s skull mask- he’s going as “Death” instead of a skeleton to be spookier with his older cousin Koan. The kids are so excited to scare everyone :)
Nigel’s shirts are two refashions. The blue and white stripe is a modified Skater (size 7/8 plus 7″ in length) cut from one my husbands polo shirts and the green top is some scraps of skeleton print knit (not the best material..it stretched out width wise as you can see… but he likes the skulls) and sleeves cut from a top my mom gave me. Both went together very quickly on the serger. I love the cut of the navy and white , he looks like a little Parisian boy.
My favorite make of this week though is my theme dress for Amelie. This season’s KCW theme was Storybook and Ami had already requested a Red dress to match the outfit in her book My Pretty Princess Dress by Ilanit Oliver Illustrations by Genevieve Leloup. She loves pretending she’s off to a fancy dress party and really wants me to make all the outfits in the book.
I decided I would make the dress in a knit for comfort and found a lovely Vintage Red Hemp/Organic knit from Marcy Tilton (I bought extra to make myself a top too). I altered the skater dress (3/4T) by making two tiers in the skirt, raising the waist up, and widening the cap of the sleeve for a gathered puffy sleeve. The skirts are sewn as one layer and left as is on the hem-one reason I love knits! The neck and sleeve bands are pink cut from an old pink shirt of Ami’s that she’d outgrown. I also made a separate knit belt to attach her flower pin that she picked out at Joann’s a few months ago and was perfect for this look.
Ami had a blast telling me stories of kidnapped babies (aka Rapunzel) saved by their mommies from wicked witches while posing for these pics. I adore her expressions when she’s storytelling!
All in all KCW was a blast. I kept the sewing to quick and easy projects and didn’t stress about posting everything. I find sewing during kids clothes week four times a year is just about all the time I need to focus on my kids clothes. Since my kids are the youngest in the family we have more than enough clothes in the form of hand me downs. Stay tuned for our family Halloween Costumes post next week!
