Lace Insertion Techniques

I did a presentation this past weekend for my local ASG group and thought I’d share it here on the blog as well. We each pick a general topic and take turns sharing what we learned with the group. Our group meetings are on Zoom currently so I made up this Powerpoint presentation sharing some basic techniques for sewing and inserting lace by machine. I made up a bunch of samples before making my projects and was so excited how using these simple methods can give you the look of heirloom sewing in half the time. These techniques can be adapted to any project and used in very modern ways.

I highly suggest checking out Susan Stewart’s Craftsy Class Heirloom Sewing: Essential Techniques. She is a wonderful teacher who walks you step by step through some wonderful classic techniques. After taking this class I wanted to adapt these classic methods into my own sewing. I was especially inspired to try out these techniques after seeing the Fendi Spring 2021 show that featured many entredeux seam detail treatments.

Voile and Cotton Fabric from Organic Cotton Plus

In my samples below you’ll see I used contrast thread to make the stitching visible on camera. When you use matching thread it practically disappears on your project. Some of my images color corrected, my samples were all made in white and cream but lace can be dyed to match any project. I’m actually planning out some new makes where I’ll construct the full project and then dye afterwards. In the next few weeks I’ll be sharing some makes using these methods. Hope you enjoy!

For this blouse I inserted entredeux in between all the seams. I’ll be sharing this self drafted blouse and all the construction details on the blog next week.

This blouse was made with the same base pattern as the entredeux blouse above. I used the ladder stitch on all my facing pieces to add interest to this simple pattern. I’ll be sharing this new make with more detailed images soon.
