Navy Medallions Rashguard

I’m back this week with some more swimwear to show you guys!  I made this rashguard back in June and it’s gotten a ton of wear this summer. I love wearing rashguards- great sun protection with none of hassle of applying and re-applying sunscreen. I find the fiber content in swim material gives great coverage even if it isn’t UPF rated as long as you choose a darker color.  Which is wonderful since I really prefer a print and it’s so hard to find UPF rated material for the home sewist that isn’t a basic solid color.

I designed this based on an older-worn out- RTW rashguard that I love the fit of. The print is a bit busy to see the style lines though.  This was my trial version, next time I’ll use contrasting fabric for the sleeves. It’s a simple Raglan shape, super quick to sew up.  I whipped this out in less than an hour almost completely on my serger. I only used my regular machine to hem the body and topstitch the neckband with a simple zig zag stitch. I added the navy blue  and medallion cuffs to make the finishing even quicker. Next make I’ll alter the neckband a bit- it’s a bit too wide and funnels up if I don’t pull it down.

Fabric:

Navy Medallion Nylon Lycra Swim

Navy  Solid Nylon Spandex Tricot

Both  fabrics were purchased from The Fabric Fairy when I was making my Nautilus bikini and tankini. The medallion fabric is so soft and lightweight, lovely to sew up and comfortable to wear.  Plus really quick drying!  I wanted this to mix and match with all my swimwear for the season so I made sure all the fabrics coordinated.  I like that the swimwear I made this summer is all navy based but not too matchy matchy.  I love this medallion pattern- it’s a bit nordic looking but the pattern is  asymmetrical which keeps it a bit more abstract.   I just can’t have too much navy in my wardrobe!

I think I’m done sewing swimwear for the summer now! As much as I’d like to sew up some more we’ve only got 3 weeks until school starts on Aug. 17th so I have to focus on Back to School sewing for the kids.  Nigel will be starting 1st grade and unless Ami gets a spot on one of the many preschool wait lists I have her on she’ll be home with me.   I’ll be back next week with my late summer/fall sewing plans.

  1. I was just at the beach today, kind of wishing I had a rash guard – I’d like to keep my arms more covered, for sure. Love your fabric choice, and you mix and match swimwear wardrobe idea! Enjoy the rest of your beach time.
