Just a quick make today, a cute retro boxy top from BurdaStyle Summer Issue that I’ve been meaning to make up for a while. This top is my wearable muslin, sewn out of some leftover upholstery fabric I came across in my closet. I made some matching pillows about 6 years ago :)
Pattern: Burda 130-052014 US Striped Retro Shirt
(couldn’t find the pattern online but here’s the image on Pinterest)
I cut this in my usual size, 40, and had just enough fabric to make this up with just a yard of fabric. The top has a built-in facing with a back neck button closure. The shaping is quite nice with the bust darts and back neck darts and simple silhouette. I might just pinch out the back darts out of the pattern next time though. The sleeves are set in with a very high cap which was a bit fiddly to work with as this fabric was shredding like crazy. I went ahead and serged all my seams as I made this up. In a nicer fabric I’d probably take the time to use french seams. I took off a few inches in the body but other than that no changes.
This was a very satisfying quick make and the color looks quite good with my other handmade clothing. But what I’m super excited to share soon is my new Holly Jumpsuit from By Hand London. I sewed it up over the long weekend in a lovely white linen and it’s just stunning! Best thing I’ve ever made! My husband hates jumpsuits but even he was impressed. I also have my Carolyn Pajamas all cut out and ready to sew for Heather’s Pajama Party! I found a lovely floral thistle lawn from Marcy Tilton which is so pretty.
Hope everyone had a great weekend! We had a sweet Valentine’s day with the kids- I made some delish beignets for breakfast. February is the best-we have my birthday, then two weeks later Valentine’s and Vic’s bday! Vic’s birthday was yesterday so we had a weekend of celebrating with Vic taking off the day since Nigel was already off school for President’s day. We spent the whole day at the beach with Vic could fish, he caught a few whiting, and the kids playing. It was a beautiful though chilly day but we all had a blast. Picnics on the beach are our favorites!
Also big thanks to Nicki over at This is Moonlight for including me in her #1year1outfit Big Impact Interview series! You can read my interview on natural dyeing here! I’m so psyched to be involved in this project. I’m saving up for a loom now- I really want to learn to spin and weave this year! Happy Sewing!

I can’t wait to see your Holly! White linen will be stunning… my husband was the same when I made my black linen Holly – ‘wow… that’s actually cool… and sexy’ LOL
I like this top. I recently tested out the now infamous Simplicity 1366. Not super impressed but wasn’t sure if it was my fabric. This looks like an interesting alternative
Thanks so much! I love your black linen Holly- it’s so elegant looking! Your Holly was one of the makes that sold me on the pattern :) I really like this Burda top pattern, really simple but nice clean lines. I’ll definitely be making more.
I love the length of this shirt. And seeing this fabric in used again!
Thanks Mom! I loved that you recognized the fabric right away! :)
Very nice shirt and a great use of leftover fabric.
Thanks so much! I’ve been slowly working my way through my remnants. This top was perfect for that!
I love the shape of this top. It’s a great length.
It’s a great top, I know I’ll be making more! Thanks!
