Sophie Swimsuit and Cropped Rashguard

When Heather at Closet Case Files was on the lookout for pattern testers I jumped at the chance to participate.  I just love her patterns!  I was really thrilled when I saw it was for a swimsuit.  Here in Florida I’m at the pool or beach with the kiddos ALL THE TIME!  And as luck would have it I already had the materials on hand-that’s what I call kismet!

My first version for pattern testing was made before corrections were added so I’m showing off my second version today. A fabulous paisley bikini!

This is version B, the bikini top and high waist bottoms.  Plus I made a cute cropped rashguard out of the fabric I used to line the suit, in a coordinated coral.  I used my raglan pattern to draft this rashy.  I also did some nifty cover stitching on the seams with my newest machine too.

Now that we’re officially into summer vacation here in Plantation we’ve been spending a ton of time at the pool and the beach with the kids.  Our new nightly ritual is family dinner followed by an hour or two poolside.  We just found our new beach this past weekend- Hugh Taylor Birch State Park in Ft. Lauderdale- just beautiful!

My first version had some fit issues but this second make, after some adjustments were made to the pattern, fits perfectly!  The bust is supportive and nicely shaped.  I’m glad I went with the foam cups since it really shapes the bust and the underwires are so comfy.  I’m thrilled that I could make the interior of this so pretty!  I went with the cup 4 since I was in between sizes(35.5) and normally wear a 36 wire.  I really love the high waist (which hides my mummy tummy) and the shaping on the bikini bottoms is so flattering.   I’m already working on another one using color blocking in navy, turquoise and white!

I’ve been wearing this suit for about a month and it’s really held up.  Perfect for playing at the pool and beach with my kiddos. Lots of support and it really stays put!  I feel really confident in this silhouette.  Pretty but still a bit demure.  I totally recommend trying out this pattern.  Happy Summer + Happy Sewing!

So THIS was your pattern test! I’m really excited to see it. Yours is the first of the pattern testers I’ve seen since reading Heather Lou’s blog post last night. This looks great. I’m so happy to see a supportive bathing suit option. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that someone hacks it into a tankini. Also, your rash guard looks 100% professional and so does the inside of your suit. Good job!

Thanks Lisa! It’s a fab suit-really supportive! It would be super easy to make into a tankini. Version A is a one piece so you could separate it at the waist with no problems. Thanks again!

What a cute suit! Very pin-up girl style. And the fabric is a throw back to the Pucci 60s. The rash guard is very stylish, although I’d be worried about belly-burn when on the beach, but just right for in the pool. I also love the kids swim gear. There’s lots to learn from this project.

Thanks Mom! The fabric totally reminded me of a vintage Pucci dress I used to have! I agree- this rashy is best for the pool- I’ll be using more coverage in full sun- I just liked the silhouette. :)

THIS PRINT! I love it so much! And the pink lining just makes it that much prettier! I love your version Rebecca and I admit that after making the bottoms and seeing how beautifully they fit….well, I’m almost tempted to make the bikini view.

    Sigh…your locale is beautiful too!

Thanks so much Sue! Isn’t the print awesome-it makes me happy every time I put it on! The bottoms really do fit well- This is the most comfortable I’ve ever felt in a bikini. You should totally give it a go. Of course I really want a tankini after seeing yours! Florida is so gorgeous and lush this time of year :)
