Yellow Floral Vintage McCall’s 6634 Blouse

I’m always on the lookout for interesting vintage sewing patterns and excitedly stumbled across this 80’s style Blouse with a gathered front yoke. This first version is my very wearable muslin in a leafy floral japanese lawn in a shade of yellow I don’t normally wear but was instantly drawn to. The fabric is crisp but very lightweight which makes it perfect for the light gathering on this top. It’s a perfect spring make!

If you look very closely at the yoke in this image you can see my tiny cuts accidentally made with my pinking shears!

This was a very simple and straightforward pattern. The front is divided into two pieces, a base front with gathers and a yoke. It has an upper collar on the straight grain and under collar on bias which attaches into the self facing at the notched edge of the shirt front. It has a curved extended shoulder seam which is very lovely. This pattern was a perfect fit out of the envelope for me though there is no waist shaping so the shirt untucked is a bit underwhelming. For my next version I’ve redrafted the base to be a bit more cropped with a tie front since that’s how I’ve been wearing this blouse. My favorite feature is the the yoke- It adds just enough interest to a relatively simple pattern.

I did have one mistake with this make, I pinked the seams at the yoke and accidentally caught a tiny bit of the exterior. So I now have three very tiny trapezoid clips. Luckily they are very tiny and seem pretty stable! I may have to reinforce that area in the future.

I’m working on a program on lace insertion tutorial for my ASG group (for our July meeting) so I’m planning a modified version of this top with lace insertion at the yoke. I’ve been working on tester samples all week with some gorgeous french laces and entredeux I bought a few months ago.

This fabric is just gorgeous, with a light but crisp hand and a beautiful drape. I was pleasantly suprised by how nice this color looks on me. I’m using the rest of my leftover fabric from this top to make a Haslam slip dress from the 1920’s which I just basted together to check the fit and love!

I’ve also made the shorts from this pattern in a crisp french twill which are just beautiful. I’ll be sharing those soon with my Vintage Beach jacket. I made a complete vintage look with the shorts from this pattern, a vintage swim bra and a vintage Beach jacket with seahorse embroidery which I can’t wait to share!

On the Homefront-

Today is the last day of school for the kiddos and they finished out the year with straight A’s! Looking forward to a slow paced relaxing summer at home. Nigel is getting vaxxed this weekend so we just have to wait on the approval for the younger ages so Ami can get her shot and we can get back to normal. I’m also walking with no limp- unless I’m really tired- which is wonderful. The daily yoga has really helped and I’m almost back to my regular routine with a few minor modifications since my foot is not as flexible as it was before.

It’s now hurricane season in Florida so we’re getting the house ready again and I’m all prepped. Rainy season means my garden is starting to look amazing again. I planted a bunch of new herbs that I’m keeping near the kitchen and let my larger garden go to all wildflowers and leafy sun loving plants. You can see in these pictures how big my vines are getting cascading over our fence. I just did some new plantings out front that seem to be taking off.

Back soon with a ton of fresh makes! I’ve sewn quite a few things lately but wasn’t able to easily photograph until now. Plus I’ve been working on a bunch of pattern drafts that I’m really excited to test out. I could spend all day drafting patterns happily. Happy Sewing!
